Background of the Study
Cultural expectations significantly influence political participation, especially for women, who often face social pressure to conform to traditional roles and expectations (Hassan & Musa, 2024). In Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, cultural norms place restrictions on women’s roles in public life, and this extends to their participation in politics (Dawud & Farouk, 2023). These cultural expectations impact women’s political careers, limiting their opportunities to rise to leadership positions, contest elections, or participate actively in political decision-making (Bello & Abubakar, 2025). This study seeks to investigate the effects of cultural expectations on female politicians’ careers in Dutse, examining how societal norms influence their political trajectories and leadership effectiveness.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Cultural expectations in Dutse Local Government Area have hindered the political careers of many women, limiting their involvement in key decision-making processes and reducing their ability to achieve leadership positions (Musa & Aliyu, 2023). Despite increasing awareness of gender equality, women continue to face societal pressure to prioritize family and domestic duties over their political careers, which restricts their full participation in politics. This study aims to explore how cultural expectations affect female politicians’ careers in Dutse and propose ways to overcome these cultural barriers.
